Senegal enters the final from an underdog position. “The Lions of Teranga” shared a group with other finalist Algeria, and entered the knockout stage from the second place, which pitted them against Uganda, Benin and Tunisia respectively. Each of these matches saw the Senegalese escape by the skin of their teeth with 3 straight 1 goal victories. Its semi-final against Tunisia only went its way thanks to a Tunesian own goal in the 100th minute. Both teams had failed to convert a penalty up until then…

Look out for: Sadio Mané

With 3 goals in 5 matches so far, it’s obvious that Sadio Mané has been instrumental in Senegal’s run in this tournament. Since he won the Champions League with Liverpool, the forward knows how to perform in the games that matter. Despite its many talents, though, Senegal’s national team a far cry from 2019’s Liverpool. Will it be up to Mané with a standout individual action?

Algeria won its group C that also included final opponents Senegal with relative ease. After the group phase, Ivory Coast proved to be the toughest client, as the “Desert Foxes” needed overtime and penalties to beat the West-Africans. Semi-finalist Nigeria, too, was looking forward to overtime, until Riyad Mahrez curled a free kick wonderfully into the net while the last minute was ticking away. The head-to-head record favours Algeria: it never lost to Senegal in the tournament’s history.

Look out for: Riyad Mahrez

Just like Mané, Riyad Mahrez has scored 3 goals in the tournament up until now, but he has played one more match than his rival. The magnificent free kick that launched Algeria into this final will surely have given Mahrez wings. Any offensive action from him will definitely get a thorough defensive reaction from Senegal’s defence, but given the slightest chance, he could very well make the difference.
