Blackjack tips and tricks

On the surface, blackjack is fairly simple. Just ask the dealer cards and try to get as close to 21 as possible without going over it. Easy! Blackjack has, of course, much more nuances to it than that, if you’re in it for some real money. This timeless casino classic is widely considered as the casino game with the best player value, so enjoy some tips and tricks that you need to know before committing yourself to blackjack sessions at!

Assume that there are more 10’s in the game than you think

Casino blackjack is generally played with eight decks of cards, to make it more difficult to “count cards”. As an obvious effect, all cards are more likely to appear at random. 10’s, specifically, will pop up more often, as actual 10’s, jacks, queens and kings have a value of 10. As a general rule to keep you from making regrettable mistakes that will seem avoidable in retrospect, you can safely overestimate the amount of 10’s in the game by a small margin.

Double your bet whenever you have 11

There are a few initial card combinations that naturally increase your chances of coming out on top against the dealer. That’s why you get the option to double your bet if your hand shows a certain value. You’ll only get one follow-up card, but he chances of getting one that will get you close to 21 without going over it are the greatest if your initial hand shows an 11. All you’d need from there to get to 21 is a 10, while even a lowly 6 will get you a qualifying 17.

Split on double 9's, 8’s, 7’s or aces

Whenever you get identical values (double jacks, double 5’s), you’ll get the option to split your hand into 2 separate hands you can play on as usual. This approach is most useful when you get double 9’s, 8’s, 7’s or aces. Doubling is less interesting for any other double combination, as you’ll also double your stake. In the case of 9’s, 8’s, 7’s or aces, there is actually a slightly but sensibly higher chance to follow up with cards that will land you near 21. Worth the risk!
