British GP preview

13.07.2019

On Sunday, Formula 1 fanatics get ready for the British Grand Prix at the Silverstone circuit. Who will follow up Vettel's win from last year? Read on to learn more!

The circuit

Since 1987, the British Grand Prix calls legendary Silverstone in Northamptonshire its home. Formerly an RAF airfield, it’s now one of the fastest tracks in Formula 1, with some truly dangerous high-speed corners. Legendary as it may be, though, there has been a lot of talk about the state of the surface. A much-needed renovation didn’t end up as hoped, with bumps and puddles leading to unsafe driving conditions which, in turn, led to the shock cancellation of last year’s MotoGP. The one-time airfield received a more professional surface do-over these last few months – in fact, the final layers were only added some weeks ago… What will this all mean for the race? Only one way to find out!

The favourites

Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) will be racing on home turf, and with 5 wins, he currently shares the record at Silverstone. 4 of these wins were even back-to-back from 2014 until 2017. Hamilton also holds the records for fastest laps ever at 1:25.892 while qualifying, and 1:30.621 during the 2017 British GP. So far this season, the Brit has won 6 out of 9 GPs this year. If he wins on Sunday, he’s the solitary record holder…

Hamilton may have more wins in the British Grand Prix, but last year, Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari) renewed his rivalry with his British competitor by besting him in his own back yard, keeping him from a record 6th win. After a rather slow start of the season, Vettel managed his best results in second places in Monaco and Canada. If he gets luck on his side, he could hit his rival right where it hurts once more.

Racing prodigy Max Verstappen (Red Bull Racing Honda) doesn’t have the greatest memories of last year’s Grand Prix at Silverstone, when a brake by wire issue forced him to retire from the race. He’s expected to be back with a vengeance, as he proved to be in fine form these days with a first place in the Austrian GP on June 30. Can he assure the last laugh in the battle between Mercedes and Ferrari?
