El Derbi Madrileño preview

Madrid is bracing for a football earthquake this weekend! Two of the most successful and most popular teams in the world face off in the Spanish capital: it’s time for “El Derbi Madrileño” between Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid, Saturday night at 9 p.m. in the Wanda Metropolitano! Are you ready to bet and win? Knowledge is power: arm yourself – we’ll give you the downlow here!

The history

The Madrid Derby, colloquially called El Derbi Madrileño, has a rich history that goes back over 100 years. The fierce rivalry stems from a time when Madrid FC – as Real was known back in the early 1900s – was so powerful that it absorbed almost all of the other football teams in Madrid, effectively eliminating local competitors in many ways. After some time, only one team managed to withstand the takeover tactics: Atlético Madrid, which could count on the financial backing of Athletic Bilbao.

As such, many fans of small teams that disappeared at the hands of Madrid FC, turned to Atlético Madrid. Later, after Madrid FC obtained the “Real” moniker, the division between both city clubs even gained a class political dimension, as Real came to be known as the elite team approved by the king of Spain, while Atlético was considered to be more of a working-class club. Over the years, many of the origins of the rivalry became football folklore, but the rivalry itself is still one of the strongest in Spain!

Atlético’s recent record

Atlético Madrid currently sits in second position behind Real, with 4 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss so far this season. Los Colchoneros may have seen French goal getter Antoine Griezmann leave its ranks for Barcelona, but with João Felix, they have one of the most promising players in Europe to make up for it.

Last 3 games (all competitions):

  • Atlético Madrid – Juventus (Champions League): 2-2
  • Atlético Madrid – Celta Vigo (La Liga): 0-0
  • Mallorca – Atlético Madrid (La Liga): 0-2

Correctly predicting a scoreline of 1-0 will get you €86 from a €10 bet!

Real’s recent record

Real has attracted plenty of flack for lacklustre performances in spite of headline-worthy summer signings like Eden Hazard, who is yet to shine like the star that he is. However the perception may be, their efforts find Los Blancos in first place, with 4 wins, 2 draws, and 0 losses in La Liga so far.

Last 3 games (all competitions):

  • Paris Saint-Germain – Real Madrid (Champions League): 3-0
  • Sevilla – Real Madrid (La Liga): 0-1
  • Real Madrid – Osasuna (La Liga): 2-0

Hazard to finally show his true self? Win €110 by betting €10 on a 1-2 victory for Real!

The verdict

Historically, it has been Real Madrid that won the most important city derby in Spain: in 222 encounters so far, Real beat Atlético 110 times – more than half. Atlético only managed as many wins as there have been draws between the two: 56. However, it should be noted that much of the current hype around Real came from a period when the activities of one Cristiano Ronaldo made world football headlines.

Since the Portuguese superstar has moved on to Juventus in Italy’s Serie A, Los Blancos have struggled to impress on the one hand, while on the other, they do top the La Liga standings. Atlético, in second place, is on point so far this season, and a victory over its royal rival could see it grow the wings it needs to stay on top of its competitors. Could this clash of the titans end in a frustrating draw @3.40?
