European competitions in full swing

The next weeks, we’re witnessing the highly anticipated return of the big European football competitions. From tomorrow evening, we’re treated to some truly epic matchups as giants of the game come face to face. Of course, this offers us plenty of awesome betting options! Let’s look at the games before us and see if we can learn anything that might give us an edge...

Champions League: round of 16

In Europe’s most prestigious football competition, we find, of course, the greatest champions of the game. In this round of 16, we have all the usual suspects now that the plucky outsiders have been gently but decidedly guided off the stage. There are no small teams left, and any slip-up now could spell disaster for even the biggest team. This could get interesting, so prepare yourself with some insights on the biggest encounters.

Atlético Madrid – Liverpool (Tuesday, February 18, 9 p.m.)

Liverpool, the title defender, is starting its round of 16 against the Atlético Madrid. While Liverpool has been stomping through the Premier League with impressive might, Atlético has not enjoyed similar success in La Liga. Los Colchoneros will need a good result with no goals conceded in this first leg if they want to have a shot at surviving into the quarterfinals. Can Liverpool’s Reds keep stomping through the Champions League too, or is their luck slowly running out?

A fair draw (@3.10) with goals on either side could be considered a victory for Liverpool in this first leg...

Real Madrid – Manchester City (Wednesday, February 26, 9 p.m.)

In another game that might very well have been a Champions League final if the draw had been different, Real Madrid meets Manchester City. Hard to imagine that in a few weeks time, one of these superpowers will exit the European stage! Manchester City may perform as well as it always does on the pitch, but with the possibility of severe repercussions after rumoured financial malversations heavy on its mind, it could very well be caught off-guard by Los Blancos.

Europa League: round of 32

In the Europa League, we still find 2 Belgian teams in action, as both Belgian Pro League leader Club Bruges, and its competitor for the title KAA Gent, have survived the harsh European winter. Both teams have some high-profile opponents lined up for them. Elsewhere in Europe, too, some stellar clashes are taking place. Can the plucky outsiders that remain in this hard-to-predict competition get the upper hand on their more illustrious challengers?

Club Bruges – Manchester United (Thursday, February 20, 6.55 p.m.)

Club Bruges’s Jan Breydel stadium prepares to host Manchester United, one of the biggest names in football history. Though their brightness has dimmed recent seasons, the Red Devils are still a worthy contender, and Club Bruges will need to be at its absolute best to keep its chances intact. The current champion in Belgium seems well on its way to another title this season, but with fights on two fronts, something might have to give at some point.

AS Roma – KAA Gent (Thursday, February 20, 6.55 p.m.)

KAA Gent, too, has drawn a top European team to overcome if it wants to participate in the Europa League’s round of 16. AS Roma receives the Buffalos in its Stadio Olimpico off the back of a recent Serie A slump, while KAA Gent still has leader Club Bruges dead in its sights from a second position in the Belgian Pro League. The Ghent side will look for the all-important away goal in Italy’s capital, but it will find no Roman holiday come Thursday...

KAA Gent to net at least once with the last goal @3.20 could make all the difference here!
