La Vuelta a España preview

21.08.2019

The 74th edition of the Spanish Vuelta starts on Saturday, for a gruelling 21 days of cycling in the hot Spanish sun. Spain’s geography allows for plenty of variation, with flat coastal stages, hilly inland stages and Pyrenean mountain stages all on the menu. Who will follow Simon Yates on the honour roll for this world-renowned cycling event? Read on to find out some options for where you could put your money!

Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma)

Slovenian ski-jumper-turned-cyclist Primož Roglič has picked up plenty of momentum with high-profile wins left and right this year, including first places in the Tour de Romandie, the UAE Tour and the Tirreno–Adriatico. He’s still missing the ultimate mantlepiece, though: a Grand Tour first place finish. As one of the most talented allrounders in modern cycling, he’s perfect for the job of tackling the variety that the Vuelta has to offer, while at the same time pacing himself enough to preserve energy for a consistent tour.

Bet on Primož Roglič to win the Vuelta and win €28 from a €10 bet!

Miguel Ángel López (Astana)

Young Colombian Miguel Ángel López has made name for himself with enough wins to prove that he means business. That he managed to get the third place in last year’s Vuelta while still winning first place “young rider” trophies this year should say enough. As a climber, he will be more at ease in the Pyrenees, so it should be his strategy to hit the competition hard right where he can make the best time. If he keeps it together for a whole tour, this win could very well mean the start of a Grand Tour dominance.

Bet on Miguel Ángel López to win the Vuelta and win €40 from a €10 bet!

Richard Carapaz (Movistar)

In no time, Ecuador’s own hero Richard Carapaz climbed the ranks of international cycling. Just look at the Giro, where he finished in fourth place finish in 2018, and in first place this year – the first time an Ecuadorian won a Grand Tour. Thanks to some top ten finishes in smaller vueltas (including the Tour of Asturias first place in the general classification as well as in the points classification), he has plenty of experience on Spanish soil. More at home in the hills and the mountains, it remains to be seen if the demanding Vuelta is his deal.

Bet on Richard Carapaz to win the Vuelta and win €43.50 from a €10 bet!

Steven Kruijswijk (Jumbo-Visma)

It’s always been almost for Dutchman Steven Kruijswijk. The strong climber managed top 5 finishes in all 3 Grand Tours, but hasn’t made it to the highest podium yet. Has the time finally come for the “Clothes Hanger”? Most recently, he fought his way to the third place in the Tour de France. His other races mirror this level of success. A lot will depend on the role he will need to play for his team. If Roglič happens to falter in the mountains, he could take over, on the condition that he still has the legs for it, after the Tour de France...

Bet on Steven Kruijswijk to win the Vuelta and win €100 from a €10 bet!
