Match of the week: Premier League clashes

21.02.2020

The English Premier League is the scene of epic football clashes, week after week. This weekend around, we zoom in on two of the biggest games in this dynamic competition: Chelsea – Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester – Manchester City. While all 4 of these complete the top five, they are hopelessly behind steamrolling leader Liverpool. They’re all still firmly in the running for big consolation prizes, though. Whoever wins this weekend can do some serious harm to the European ambitions of their opponents!

Chelsea – Tottenham Hotspur (Saturday February 22, 1.30 p.m.)

It seems that, ever since the departure of some high-profile players such as Eden Hazard, Chelsea has had a difficult time proving itself to be the superpower it is considered, this season. Its recent Premier League record is indicative of a slump: its last victory dates back to January 11, when it smashed Burnley 3 to 0. At the moment, Chelsea sits in 4th position, followed by Tottenham Hotspur.

Only one point separates the two London powerhouses. The Spurs will need to bounce back after tasting Champions League defeat against RB Leipzig last Wednesday. In the Premier League, at least, Tottenham has the better recent record over their London rivals. The winner of this clash could very well be the team to end up in the Champions League, sending the loser to the Europa League, or worse…

Leicester – Manchester City (Saturday February 22, 6.30 p.m.)

Leicester is on track to performing as well as it did in its title-winning season of 2015/2016. Of course, no one could’ve predicted Liverpool’s absolute domination this year, so another title for the Foxes is pretty much off the table. From their 3rd place, they’re a solid contender for Champions League football next season, though. Their efforts see the Foxes head of 4th placed Chelsea with a clean 9 point.

Manchester City, meanwhile, is 4 points ahead of Leicester. The 2nd placed title defender is trailing 22 behind Liverpool, so absolute miracles aside, the Citizens can put any hope of becoming back-to-back champions to bed. One statistic this season that’s unlikely to go to another side is that of most successfully attacking side. Manchester City netted 67 times across its 26 EPL games so far.
