Belgium – Iceland (King Baudouin Stadium, Brussels, Tuesday, September 8, 8.45 p.m.)

Belgium and Iceland have a history in the Nations League, and it’s unkind for the Icelandic outfit. In the inaugural 2018-2019 season of Europe’s national competition that replaces the friendlies, Belgium won both of the group phase games: 0-3 in Iceland and 2-0 in Belgium.

Furthermore, Iceland has not managed to make a single goal against Belgium in eight competitive games. The last time Iceland managed to net against the Red Devils was in a 5-2 World Cup qualifier defeat, back in 1957. The head-to-head record is one-sided, too: Belgium won all 11 games so far.

It’s important to note, however, that the Icelanders are as fierce as they are small. They impressed against England on Saturday, holding on until the very end when a penalty goal by the English a missed penalty crushed their hopes of a fair draw. The game showed the notorious toughness of Iceland.

Belgium can’t simply count on its history against Iceland – underestimating the opposition from the barren island nation could prove an expensive mistake indeed. The Red Devils don’t have the support of the home crowd, or any crowd for that matter, either. Still, a victory for Belgium seems fairly obvious.
