Nations League finals: come on, Belgium!

The second edition of Nations League is arriving to its conclusion this weekend, with the semi-finals on Wednesday and Thursday and the third-place game and the final on Sunday. All participants are debutants in the finals, but they are far from the least. Belgium, Italy, France, or Spain: who will win the Nations League 2021?

Semi-final 1: Italy – Spain (Wednesday, October 6, 8.45 p.m.)

Italy is in cloud nine after winning the European Championship for a second time. After the Euro, though, its record isn’t stunning. In their three World Cup qualifiers, the Italians only made 5 points, drawing twice (1-1 against Bulgaria and 0-0 against Switzerland) and winning 5-0 to Lithuania.

Spain, Italy’s opponent this Wednesday, is of course many times stronger what Italy encountered after the Euro. What’s more: both football superpowers from southern Europa met before in that tournament, when Italy beat Spain to enter the final. Spain will be out for revenge here!

Semi-final 2: Belgium – France (Thursday, October 7, 8.45 p.m.)

Like Spain against Italy, Belgium has unfinished business with France in this rematch of the World Cup semi-finals in 2018. Back then, the French won 1-0, leaving Belgium to fight for the third place. Since then, revenge against the eventual World Cup winner has been all that’s on Belgian minds.

As World Cup holder, France still has the name, but does it still have the game, too? The French squad left the Euro prematurely in the round of 16, where it lost to small neighbour Switzerland. Its World Cup qualifiers haven’t exactly been a high-flying success either: it only won 1 game: 2-0 against Finland…

Third-place game and final (Sunday, October 10)

With only 4 teams in the running, scenarios are of course limited. Both the third-place game and the final will be Italy or Spain versus Belgium or France. Whether it’s for the grand prize in the final or the consolation prize in the third-place game, Italy – Belgium would be another encounter that we saw in the Euro. Back in the Summer, it was Italy who defeated Belgium 1-2. Imagine this as a rematch!

Of course, it all depends on what the results of the midweek games are. Both France and Spain can rise to the occasion for another prize in their respective trophy rooms. Either way, there’s excitement afoot in the Nations League, as all 4 contestants are in it for the first time. Who can join Portugal in history as winner of the Nations League?
